Probiotic tampons are something that appeared in pharmacies not so long ago, but already causes a lot of controversy. For the price – 2-3 times more expensive than usual, according to the description – as if with a wow effect. “They prevent the development and recurrence of bacterial and fungal infections (candidiasis, trichophytosis, mycoplasmosis), maintain the disturbed microflora and the appropriate pH level, contribute to the speedy recovery after gynecological operations and help women feel more comfortable during menopause. Recommended for those who have diabetes, lowered immunity, who often change sexual partners and visit public pools. Sounds promising, but isn’t it more logical to use candles for this? Are the novelties so effective, or is it just another marketing ploy? We got the opinion of a specialist.
What are the advantages of such funds
Healthy intimate flora have a low pH of 3.8 to 4.2. Such an environment is a real hell for most pathogens, they simply cannot grow and develop there. At the same time, the natural microflora of the vagina is 90-96% composed of lactobacilli. These are, let’s say, guards at the gate, the first line of natural protection of the intimate sphere from infection. However, during critical days, the “defense” is washed away, there are fewer lactobacilli, and more dangerous bacteria. In women whose health is all right, this imbalance returns to normal soon after menstruation. But not everyone is so lucky.
What can provoke a violation of the normal microflora?
- immune problems, hormonal disorders,
- surgical operations,
- somatic diseases, including gastrointestinal pathologies, diabetes, obesity,
- pregnancy and childbirth,
- taking antibiotics,
- wearing synthetic clothing
- radiation therapy or chemotherapy,
- the use of aggressive means for intimate hygiene,
- genital trauma,
- exhaustion of the body after stress, starvation.
How do tampons help? They instantly absorb blood and deprive bacteria of nutrients for their growth. In addition, tampons secrete billions of live strains of lactic acid bacteria, creating a protective barrier against pathogens.
The most effective agents containing two or three strains (for example, Lactobacillus fermentum 57A, Lactobacillus plantarum 57B, Lactobacillus gasseri 57C). Each of them complements and enhances the effect of each other. Such preparations more accurately mimic the normal intimate flora. Information about which strains and how many of them must be indicated in the instructions for tampons.
Another important point – before using such funds, an examination by a gynecologist is necessary. The doctor will study the medical history, find out if there are any contraindications, and explain whether you need such funds. Probiotics are a means of prevention, they will not get rid of inflammation, genital infections, adhesions, bleeding and other problems. Therefore, it is necessary to first be treated, and only then restore the microflora. There is no talk of any general effect on the body. Therefore, such drugs have a minimum of side effects: an allergic reaction to substances contained in the preparations (for example, starch, magnesium stearate, sucrose), increased secretions, sometimes a slight burning sensation or itching.
As for contraindications, there are few of them. For example, an acute stage of an oncological process, an acute injury to the genital organs, etc. Don’t risk prescribing these products yourself.
How often do these tampons need to be changed?
At the same frequency as normal. It all depends on the absorbency of the tampon and the intensity of menstruation. At the beginning of the period, when the bleeding is more profuse, the option with more active absorption is preferable. Change it every 3-6 hours. Further, by the end of the period, – if necessary. You can leave the tampon on for about 8 hours at night.
Is it possible to use suppositories instead of tampons to normalize microflora?
Yes, if your doctor has prescribed them for you. However, while visiting pools, public baths, swimming in rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, probiotic tampons can be used to prevent chlorinated or contaminated water from entering the intimate environment. If there is a doctor’s indication, you can also use them when you go swimming not during critical days. Before using the product, use a neutral water-based gel. This is necessary for a more comfortable introduction and release of lactic acid bacteria. But only a doctor can determine whether you should use suppositories, tampons, or both.
